Letter Writing for Kids

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

April 7, 2020

Hi everyone,

Here is a basic format to help kids start learning the ancient ways of letter writing.

Happy pen palling!

Danielle

Date (April 7, 2020)

Dear (Name of Person or Pen Pal if you don’t know yet),

This is the body of the letter. Start with a greeting (Hi! How are you?). Write about what you have been up to. All of this paragraph (don’t forget we are writing in paragraphs!) and the following paragraphs can be written like you are talking to a friend.

Use different paragraphs to talk about different things. In a closing paragraph, people often like to write about their plans or maybe what they hope they will do later on in the day or the week: “I hope that the weather stays warm so that I can go for a hike this weekend,” for example. This last paragraph is also a good place to tell your pen pal that you hope to hear from them soon.

Closing (Sincerely, Your Pen Pal, etc),

Your name

This week's topic idea:

What have you been doing since school closed?

Maybe you have spent time outdoors, made something cool, or started a new book. Introduce yourself! What would you like to share with your new pen pal?
